MARVIN x Diva Smith: The indie singer relishes her melancholy as pop songcraft in her blood

Diva Smith, 25-year-old songwriter and NYU Clive Davis alum, has never had more fun making music than she is having right now. If you ask her about her mindset while making her upcoming EP, she’ll tell you she was feeling “open-minded” and “free.” Her new EP will show a different side of her, she says — more bubbly, more bright and colorful; and the next time she is on tour playing her music, she won’t be spending as much time standing and singing with her guitar.  On her next tour, she wants to dance.

Diva Smith has garnered acclaim already for her somber, introspective singer-songwriter tracks that touch on growing up, relationships, and isolation. Prior releases like “Better in Heaven” and “I Can See In The Dark” are downtempo tracks that relish their melancholy. The subject matter of those tracks makes sense when you speak to the emotionally-sensitive Smith, who has always been quick to let music break her heart. Her father — Curt Smith of UK synth-pop heroes Tears for Fears — tells her she has always been easily moved by a sad song. Smith remembers some stories as well. Unhappy songs would leave her with a pit in her stomach that she couldn’t understand, a sense of grief that fascinated her.
