MARVIN x Julian Shah-Tayler: The Leeds-born artist on using songwriting as therapy and his expansive musical style

“I don’t have one overall sound, I just go where the muse directs me,” begins Julian Shah-Tayler, who has released a dozen albums in 15 years. “It’s both a super-power and stumbling block,” the Leeds, UK-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and producer says of the creative processes behind his diverse discography, which pinballs between piano-led acoustic to strutting New Wave. “I don’t feel limited by a particular palette or a specific genre.”

Such free-ranging creative expression is channeled into his live performances as The Singularity. “It’s the name for where our understanding collapses and we have no idea of what happens next,” he explains, going on to give examples of the perimeter of a black hole, the advances of AI, and the trajectory of his own music. “You never know what sounds, influences or lyrical imperatives will follow. I love linguistic ambiguity”.
