MARVIN x Nova Twins: The British duo on finding power in vulnerability and creating new album ‘Parasites & Butterflies’ under pressure

Following the massive success of their sophomore album Supernova, touring as opening support for the likes of MUNA, Muse, Foo Fighters, and Lenny Kravitz, the Nova Twins are back and ready to share their most vulnerable and balanced album yet, Parasites & Butterflies

The BRIT-nominated duo — comprised of vocalist and guitarist Amy Love and bassist Georgia Smith — spoke this June about the creation of their third effort, the tolls of touring, and viewing vulnerability as a power rather than a liability.

Where did the album title Parasites & Butterflies come from? Why did it feel like the perfect fit for this LP?

Amy Love: “It’s a lyric from our song “Sandman.” That song really plays with opposites. Parasites & Butterflies [as a title] felt really fitting. We say this album is the bridge between chaos and beauty. So it’s like we thought that was a good reference point.

At what point or moment of the album’s creation did you realise that the interplay of chaos and beauty was going to be its theme?

Georgia Smith: After the songs were written, we started to see these patterns and themes throughout the songs. When we go into an album, we’re not necessarily thinking, ‘It’s going to be about the bridge between chaos and beauty,’ but the theme showed itself after listening back to the tracks. The album just wrote itself in that way. It’s definitely a healing album because it is more vulnerable than our previous LPs.
